WIPO’s Assistant Director General in Ethiopia

World Intellectual Property Organization-WIPO Assistant Director General Ambassador Minelik Alemu made official visit in Ethiopia from Oct 23-26, 2017. The Assistant Director General discussed with Ministry of Science and Technology and Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office on ways Ethiopia can increase WIPO’s support for its Intellectual Property-IP protection activities.     

Focusing on IP law enforcement and Traditional knowledge and Genetic resource protection, the ambassador made discussion with stakeholders on Oct 24, 2017 at Getfam Hotel. In his first discussion concerned on IP law enforcement, participants selected from Police, Federal Attorney General, Justice Bureau, Judges and National IP Council attended; considered how far IP law enforced in Ethiopia and troubles affecting the enforcement. In the conversation, Infringement behaviors that are being seen in the trade sector and IP awareness of the trade community as well as the general public were also raised and ways to tackle the problems cooperatively were addressed. Likewise, it was said that enhancing the enforcement capacity and working supportively in the IP law violation investigation process should be facilitated.

Up on the discussion, which concerns Traditional Knowledge and Genetic Resource Protection and held in the afternoon, ways in which Ethiopia can benefit well from the sector were discoursed along with Ethiopian Biodiversity Institution, Food, Medicine and Health care Administration and Control Authority, Ethiopia Public Health Institution, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change as well as Office experts. It was said that, despite the fact that Ethiopia has numerous resources and knowledge of tradition, the country is still unable to benefit as expected. The Ambassador disclosed that WIPO will strengthen its support to enable the country benefit better from the sector.

The Ambassador has also met EIPO management team at the office on Oct 25, 2017 and discussed on the office activities, future directions as well as WIPO’s support.

It is indeed a great enchantment for me to address some vital and kernel issues and points with regard to the vision, mission, values and goals of our office- Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) in a nutshell. This is in order to shed lights on our mapped out plan which we all are duty bound to carry to its end using all possible modus operandi . It is a glaring and undeniable fact that the EIPO needs to strive to its utmost capacity to essentially strengthen the national IPR system as a sources of wealth creation and value-addition in its own right, to the benefit of the society and individuals, taking all administrative, technical and legal frameworks into account.
