It is indeed a great enchantment for me to address some vital and kernel issues and points with regard to the vision, mission, values and goals of our office- Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) in a nutshell. This is in order to shed lights on our mapped out plan which we all are duty bound to carry to its end using all possible modus operandi . It is a glaring and undeniable fact that the EIPO needs to strive to its utmost capacity to essentially strengthen the national IPR system as a sources of wealth creation and value-addition in its own right, to the benefit of the society and individuals, taking all administrative, technical and legal frameworks into account. Equitable Remuneration on Ethiopia’s Genetic Resources: Teff Patent Registration

Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office Held a discussion about value adding to the genetic resource and traditional knowledge and Ethiopia’s equitable remuneration on its genetic resources from November 16-17, 2017 G.C.

The Office Director General Mandefro Eshete (Dr.) stated that since Ethiopia has a verity of and scopes and climate condition, it enables the country to have several genetic resources and traditional knowledge. Teff is one of the major genetic resource of Ethiopia; Mandefro (Dr.) added and the aim of the two days discussion is that the Nation opposing the teff patent granted for Dutch Company in  five European countries which are Belgium, German, Austria, Spain and Great Britain and demanding equitable remuneration of its largest genetic resources, teff.

Intellectual Property Development Directorate A/Director Taddess Worku presented a paper on the benefits of adding value on Genetic Resources and related Traditional Knowledge.

Taddess also emphasized the nation is not benefited well from its handful genetic resources and traditional knowledge because value is not added on them.

Anthon Kohn (Dr.) attorney in Europe on his paper stated the deficiencies on teff patent registration in the five European Countries and the rejection of the teff patent application in Japan and the United States. Anthon (Dr.) further claimed that Ethiopia should use these deficiencies to litigate before court and invalidate the patent registration.

Minister for Science and Technology Getahun Mekuria (Dr.) (Eng.) who is also a chair person to the Inter-Ministerial committee underscored that the diplomatic effort has to be taken as the favorable approach to the cancelation of teff patent registration.
