Message from the

Director General

It is indeed a great enchantment for me to address some vital and kernel issues and points with regard to the vision, mission, values and goals of our office- Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) in a nutshell. This is in order to shed lights on our mapped out plan which we all are duty bound to carry to its end using all possible modus operandi . EIPO discusses the Traditional Knowledge Draft Law

Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) discussed the Traditional Knowledge and Folklore Intellectual Property Rights Protection Draft Law with traditional healers, agricultural research centers, justice departments, Jimma zone culture and tourism bureau and researchers and professors from various departments of Jimma University on December 29, 2017 in Jimma.

The objective of the conference was to harvest constructive opinion and critics to improve the submitted Traditional Knowledge and Folklore Intellectual Property Rights Protection Draft Law.

The Office Acting Director General Ermias Yemanebirhan in his opening remarks said the necessity to establish the traditional knowledge and folklore law is vital for countries like Ethiopia since there are abundant resources on traditional knowledge and folklore.

Though, the law for traditional knowledge and folklore is essential for some countries, most developed countries are not in favor of enacting the traditional knowledge agreement in the international level at the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), he added.

Ato Tamirat Balcha a legal expert in the office had briefed the history of intellectual property system in Ethiopia before Ato Tadesse Worku presented the aspects of the traditional knowledge and intellectual property integration.

Ato Tamirat in his second presentation discussed the Traditional Knowledge and Folklore Intellectual Property Protection Draft Law.

Following the presentation of the draft law the participants made in depth discussion and forwarded a handful of constructive inputs. The participants also underlined that the draft law needs to be discussed with more stakeholders and researchers.
